50 Success or Significance?

When you stop to think about it, so much of life is geared to fulfilling some physical challenge, whether it be buying a new house or saving to put your kids through college, or simply putting food on the table.

During times of personal upheaval, our world of physical pursuit is often confronted with a spiritual realization: Our lives here on earth are just temporary.

It’s at times of illness, accident or natural disaster that the things that really matter come to the fore of our consciousness.

Sad to say, so many of us put almost all our efforts into embracing the physical world, while failing to enhance our spiritual lives, which includes investing as much time and effort into nurturing relationships with our loved ones.

At these times, we can’t help but ask ourselves questions like: “If I was going to lose everything, what would really matter to me?”

Troubled times also offer the opportunity to evaluate how we interpret the term “success” in our personal lives. For example, “Even if I am judged successful in the eyes of others, is that what life is all about? Or should I seek to move from success to significance?”

In any case, sickness, suffering, and trauma usually bring with them changes to our lives that re-define and mould our characters.
