67 End Sweep

The passengers around me were all very sympathetic to my situation, and tried to do what they could to help. Unfortunately the seating didn’t allow me to stretch out to full length but at least my leg was relatively high compared to the rest of my body.

The bad news: My back was really sore after sitting in this cramped position for the 7 1/2 hour flight.

So I was looking forward to the stopover in order to stretch the cramped muscles.

My connecting flight was in Newark, New Jersey.

It turned out that it had rained there that morning, followed by a quick freeze when the temperature dropped, which meant that all the runways were sheets of ice.

So we had to circle the airport for 30 minutes, while down below us crews worked on melting the ice on two runways, one for incoming and one for departing planes.

Since I had only had a relatively short time to switch planes in Newark, plus pass through customs, and so forth, I had called over a stewardess and asked her if I could possibly depart before the crowd. She denied me any assistance on some lame excuse.

Well, the weather conditions were cutting my connection time by 30 minutes, so as Plan B, some sympathetic passengers around me helped me hatch a plot!

A lady with a baby momentarily blocked the traffic while a huge and dear Puerto Rican fellow pretty much lifted me up and carried me in an "end sweep" all the way up to first class. Meanwhile another traveler running interference carried my backpack.
