84 – School of Circumstances

Even well intentioned friends will often assume we are merely inconvenienced when we’ve had surgery and/or are recovering from an accident. They may also assume we are clear-headed, pain free, and able to take care of ourselves and our surroundings, while we from our vantage point know that is a long way from reality. (And this is not to speak of the ones who have something stupid to add to the conversation like, "Gee, it must be nice to have people wait on you.")

Without being in this situation myself, I couldn’t have completely understood the frustration of being dependent and immobile.

This scenario is not just when laid up with a broken leg. We can find ourselves in any given situation with a feeling of frustration that people just do not understand. When this is the case, I believe the best attitude to adopt is one which seeks to see the Lord’s Hand in our life at that moment.

Imagine the Lord saying, "These circumstances are from Me. You did not come to this place by accident; it is the very place God meant for you." The Lord places us in a school of circumstanceswhere the lessons we need are taught. In which case, our surroundings and/or companions are only working out God’s Will in our lives.

Frustration can otherwise lead to anger. Anger is often a product of prolonged pain and discomfort. When we can see God’s Hand in our lives, this helps us to deal with this anger.

Healing takes more time than I could have ever imagined.

I no longer take things for granted like going for a walk or grabbing a snack out of he fridge. And when I find myself getting frustrated, tired, sad, or angry, or that life has given me more than I can handle, I am learning to just hang in there. I draw on experience to recall that things improve and if I just put in my time I will get better.

As it has been said, what doesn't kill me only makes me stronger.
