48 The 2x4 Approach

Friends describe me as a person with a lot of drive, but I have come to realize that this otherwise positive quality can too easily switch to overdrive.

And even if I am aware that this has begun happening, which is often not the case, I subconsciously attempt to justify my dogged determination and actions.

However, my conscience cannot deny the fact that when I overextend myself that certain undesirable qualities come to the fore. And the very inner quality that gives me stability and conviction in my life becomes dangerously strained, and I all too easily become a brusque, driven man.

So now when this happens, I have come to recognize the taming hand of the Lord. I refer to it as the 2x4 approach.

We had a ram that we raised from a lamb. When he grew to full adulthood, he still wanted to play and would charge us. If you were unlucky enough to be in the path of this 200-pound juggernaut, oftentimes the only way to slow him down was with a long 2x4 aimed at his rigid forehead.

When the Lord knows it’s time for a spiritual realignment in my life, He sometimes uses the 2x4 approach. It was all too obvious to me that this is what was happening. He was allowing circumstances to slow me down, rerouting my own plans and programs.
