83 – A Positive Attitude

It’s amazing how when we stop and take time to reflect and pray, and make the attempt to get the Lord’s mind on a matter, mountains of obstacles seem to just melt away. And when our attitudepicks up, our spiritual altitude does too. There’s no doubt about it, our attitude does play a big part in determining our altitude.

I had a great book recommended to me by a friend. In Never Give Up, Ron Heagy tells his story, how at age 17 he suffered a surfing accident that left him a quadriplegic. Prior, Ron had been very active and excelled in a number of sports, from wrestling, weight lifting, and bodybuilding, to pole-vaulting, football and motorcycle racing.

Reading this true-life story Never Give Up inspired me to no end. The author relates his story of overcoming incredible obstacles and learning to cope with his newfound physical limitations, and then going on to earn master’s degree in social work, and found a fully wheelchair-accessible camp, while also becoming an accomplished mouth painter and motivational speaker.

Ron Heagy’s philosophy in a nutshell: “Life is an attitude. And no matter what we’ve been given or denied in life, we can choose what our attitude will be.”

In that sense, we come to realize that many of the problems we have are self-induced. Our attitude towards life plays a big part in determining life’s attitude toward us. And so a changed attitude can often result in changed circumstances.

When I fought the tendency to complain about my lot in life, and resolved to just smile and make an effort to get on a more positive wavelength, circumstances around me improved.
