86 – God is the One who Heals

When my wife and I pray for direction on whether to go with another operation and bone graft as two surgeons have recommended, we feel that the Lord is telling us to “try another doctor”.

We live close to the border of Mexico, and feel led to try an orthopedic surgeon on the other side of the border, one who has had experience with external fixators. We contact an English-speaking doctor, who as it turns out was born and raised in the States and has chosen to practice her profession in Mexico.

Dr. Lopez is set up in a modern facility in the center of town. At her instruction, I bring along the x-rays that chronicle my history: The original break in Peru, how my bones looked after first set, and the subsequent x-rays taken every month since that time. I present the x-rays along with the background of my accident and medical attention. And I explain that I am interested in getting other medical opinions and so want to know her appraisal of my situation and what she’d recommend.

One of the first things out of Dr. Lopez’s mouth endears me to her. Her statement: “One thing you have to understand is it’s not us doctors that heal your leg.” After a pause, she goes on to say, “God is the one Who does the healing. We just monitor the progress.”

I immediately think, “Now this must be the doctor I’m meant to see.”

Dr. Lopez, aware of my hesitations about further surgery, advises we give it some more time to show bone growth. This goes along with my experience that doctors outside the States seem to have a greater belief in allowing time for things to heal naturally. She also suggests some self-therapy exercises to work on my drop foot.

This is not to say that I am not beleaguered with concerns as I reflect on what the previous two surgeons have said, that I could potentially end up crippled. In fact, the second orthopedic surgeon had even alluded to losing my leg if action is not taken.
